Frequently asked questions about our online martial arts training

If you can’t find the answer to your question below, please feel free to call us or send an email via the contact form.

Are all the Wilkes Academy online martial arts lessons live?

No. We understand with all the changes to work and family life, it’s not always possible to make a live lesson at a set time each week, so we provide both small group live sessions and pre-recorded lessons that are uploaded regularly.
If you can commit to an online live session, we encourage you to book a regular class time each week.

How do I access the lessons?

We currently use Skype for our online live training sessions. Once you’re enrolled, all you need to do is send your Skype address to info@wilkesacademy.com.au and we’ll get you set up. If you don’t have a Skype account, you can join for free here.
We’ve also created dedicated private Facebook Groups for each of our class types, where we upload the weekly training sessions. This then allows you to watch and complete at your convenience.

How long does each session run for?

Children’s online martial arts sessions run for 30 minutes.
Adult online martial arts sessions are 45 minutes.
Online fitness classes are 45 minutes.

What is the ratio of kids to students for the live sessions?

There are only 6 students in each of the live sessions to allow instructors to keep young minds focussed.

How do the kids get feedback if the sessions are pre-recorded?

At certain points in the training program, we’ll ask you to record your child’s progress and send us the video to review. We will then let you know what’s looking great and what areas need more focus.

How do you track attendance ready for progress checks and gradings?

With our live classes, we’re able to see who is online at the same time so we can record your attendance. For students who complete their class at a different time, we have an email attendance system, so when you’ve completed your session, email us the time and date and you can let us know how you went in the class.

Do I need to buy any additional equipment?

No. For some training sessions you may need items that would be similar to the cones, hoops or beanbags we use in class, but just use what you can find at home as a suitable replacement e.g. empty milk bottles, skipping ropes or tennis balls.

Martial arts is also learning about character, discipline and respect. How do you do this online?

At Wilkes Academy, we don’t just cover the technical aspects of martial arts. We believe in developing healthy minds as well as healthy bodies. Our online lessons include a mat session where instructors cover a topic of the week with the students and encourage interaction and discussion. Our on-line classes still cover the topic of the week e.g. perseverance, courtesy, integrity etc. and we provide a downloadable sheet for you to run through with your child.

How long will the lessons be available on-line?

At this stage, we have no plans to remove the sessions from the Facebook Groups, so you can practice as often as you like and go back to your favourite sessions to really master the lesson.

Will progress checks and gradings still be happening?

Absolutely! These are done as small group session via Skype so we can see you!

“Thanks so much to the instructors for making the online classes awesome.”

Jaimie Featherstone | Kids 10 -13 yo
